Stories for our magazine

In Church News on November 6, 2009 at 4:45 pm

We are looking for stories to go in the Christmas edition of the church magazine. We’d like to hear about your experiences — particularly if they have a Christmassy theme. You can write the story yourself or get one of our volunteers to interview you.

We’ve got a completely open mind about the stories we want, but just to give you a few ideas, here are a few suggested titles.

Past Christmas celebrations at St Laurence Cowley (anecdotes are very welcome)

Memories of childhood Christmases in the Cowley area or even in other countries

Interesting things that happened to you at Christmas.  (e.g.  Did anyone in your family have a December 25th baby?)

On Sunday we will be remembering the fallen of all wars in our services at 8am, 9.15am and 11am. If you would like the name of a loved one killed in war to be read out in the service, please let us know.

A History of Christianity

In Christianity on November 6, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Last night at the Rectory Father Steve watched the new BBC4 documentary series “A History of Christianity.” The first episode looked at Christian churches east of the Mediterranean and followed the faith’s journey into 7th-century China. It highlighted Christian attempts to enter into dialogue with local cultures — an approach which contrasts sharply with the conquer all mentality of some later western Christians.

Father Steve says:

“The presenter Diarmaid MacCulloch is a brilliant communicator and it had to be one of the best programmes about Christianity I’ve seen for years.”

You can catch up with the first episode and take part in an Open University survey on the BBC website. Click on this link.
